College Counseling

Maplewood provides college counseling services to students who are in Form 5 and 6, IB Year 1 and 2, or Grade 11 and 12, and who wish to pursue higher education in USA in the following areas:  

1. Developing an action plan for organizing the entire college application process.

2. Assessing the student's candidacy and identifying any personal strength or experience that makes the student unique.

3. Selecting the right colleges or universities which best fit the student's academic needs and abilities. What schools do we recommend?

4. Building a winning application to get into the college or university of your choice. In particular, we help each student prepare and review his or her application, paying special attention to these sections: 

          - Academic profile
          - SAT, AP and TOEFL tests   (Maplewood SAT Workshop) 
          - Letters of recommendation  
          - Personal essays   (Maplewood Essay Workshop) 
          - Record of extracurricular activities, services and awards
          - Special talents and unique background or experience (The Maplewood Success FactorsTM)
          - Advice and coaching for the interview, if required  

5. Working with the student and following up to make sure all the relevant application materials and test results are sent in before the deadlines.

6. Advising on final school decision upon admission.

7. Planning for student orientation and freshman course registration before departure.

College Planning

For students who are now in Form 3 and 4, or Grade 9 and 10, Maplewood provides college planning services to specifically prepare them for college or university in the US in the following areas:     

                - What to focus on in their regular studies
                - What standardized tests to take, when and how to prepare for them
                - Advice on extracurricular activities, community services, summer programs
                - How to strengthen areas of weaknesses (academic and personal) 
                - How to develop a student resume to make the future application process easier
                - How to nurture relationships with teachers and school counselors to get solid, truthful recommendations
                - What to be aware of in preparing for a future winning college application
                - Meetings to review college preparation progress throughout the year

US Boarding School Counseling

Maplewood provides US boarding school counseling services to students who are now studying in Form 2 and Form 3 in Hong Kong but who wish to transfer to Grade 9 and Grade 10 at a US boarding school in preparation for future college education in the USA.

1. Developing an action plan for organizing the entire boarding school application process.

2. Selecting the right boarding schools which best match the student's academic profile, talents, and interests.

3. Building a winning application to get into the boarding school of your choice. In particular, we help each student review his or her application, paying special attention to these sections:    

               - Academic profile    
               - SSAT and TOEFL tests 
               - Letters of recommendation
               - Personal essays and short questions
               - Parental statement (optional)
               - Record of extracurricular activities, services and awards
               - Special talents and unique background, if any
               - Advice and coaching for boarding school interview and visits
